In the early twentieth century, an English artist named Austin Osman Spare built a body of work that sits between art, magic and psychology. He is often remembered as a child prodigy, and he is said to have been the youngest artist to exhibit at the Royal Academy in London, at around the age of sixteen. Yet his lasting influence does not come from academic honors. It comes from his belief that a drawing could be more than a picture. For Spare, a line on paper could be a way of calling something into being. His life was also unusual.
