Ancient Aliens: Alien Messages in Our Dna (Season 9) | History
In this five-minute clip from the HISTORY series Ancient Aliens (Season 9, Episode 7, "Alien Messages"), published in July 2019, some ancient astronaut theorists suggest that answers to life's greatest questions might be hidden in our DNA. I could not listen to the audio, so I do not know exactly what is claimed in the clip. Here is a look at what DNA does contain, what has been proposed about messages in it, and what scientists think.
What DNA is
- The human genome has about 3 billion base pairs, written with four letters: A, T, C and G.
- Only about 1 to 2 percent codes for proteins, in around 20,000 genes.
- The rest was once called "junk DNA." In 2012, the ENCODE project said that about 80 percent had some biochemical activity, and many scientists disagreed that this means function. Much of the rest is regulatory switches, old viral remnants and repeats.
Has anyone proposed an alien message?
- Directed panspermia. In 1973, Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the DNA structure, and chemist Leslie Orgel suggested that life on Earth might have been seeded on purpose by another civilization. They offered it as a speculation, and Crick later described it as a thought experiment.
- The "genetic code SETI" paper. In 2013, Vladimir Shcherbakov and Maxim Makukov published in the journal Icarus an analysis claiming the genetic code shows numerical patterns that look designed. Other scientists found the patterns weak or explainable by chance and chemistry, and the paper has not changed the consensus.
Why patterns appear
Humans see patterns even in random data. A code with 64 possible triplets that map to 20 amino acids will show regularities simply because of chemistry and evolution. Finding a pattern is easy. Showing it carries a message is hard, and it requires ruling out natural causes.
Real messages in DNA
- In 2010, the team of J. Craig Venter built a bacterial genome in the lab and added "watermarks," including quotations and names of the authors, written in the genetic code.
- In 2012, George Church encoded a book into DNA, and in 2013 researchers stored computer files in it. DNA is a very dense way to store information.
So messages in DNA are possible, and people have already written some. Evidence that anyone else did is another matter.
The deeper wonder
Our DNA does hold a story: it is a record of billions of years of evolution, shared with every living being. About 60 percent of our genes have a counterpart in a banana, and we share roughly 98 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees. That story needs no visitors to be astonishing.
