Seven Archangels - Michael, Raphael, Chamuel, Zadkiel, Uriel

Seven Archangels - Michael, Raphael, Chamuel, Zadkiel, Uriel, Gabri...

Well Being Academy published this recording in June 2020, under the title "Seven Archangels - Michael, Raphael, Chamuel, Zadkiel, Uriel, Gabriel, Jophiel." It runs for more than thirty-two hours, and the description says the music is meant to bring you closer to "Divine Energy," relax mind and body, and prepare you for study. I could not listen to the audio, so I do not know how the music sounds. What follows is a short guide to the seven archangels and to what relaxing music can honestly do for you.

Where the seven come from

The number seven is old in Jewish and Christian writing. The Book of Tobit says that Raphael is "one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints." The Book of Revelation speaks of seven spirits before God's throne. The First Book of Enoch, a text from the last centuries before Christ, names seven: Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Sariel, Gabriel and Remiel.

The list in the title is different. Michael, Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel are well attested. Chamuel, Zadkiel and Jophiel appear in later Jewish and Christian magical traditions. The modern habit of giving each archangel a color ray comes from the twentieth century, from Theosophy and its descendants. Those associations are recent, so treat them as devotional custom and not as ancient doctrine.

The seven in short

  • Michael, "who is like God?": the guardian and warrior, often shown with a sword or scales.
  • Raphael, "God heals": the healer, who guides Tobias on his journey.
  • Gabriel, "God is my strength": the messenger of the Annunciation, and in Islam the bearer of revelation.
  • Uriel, "God is my light": linked with wisdom and insight.
  • Chamuel, associated with love and peace.
  • Zadkiel, associated with mercy and forgiveness.
  • Jophiel, associated with beauty and wisdom.

Does the music do anything?

Slow, quiet music has measurable effects. Reviews of hospital studies find that listening to calm music can lower anxiety and heart rate a little, and can help some people fall asleep. That benefit comes from the calm itself, whatever the title on the video. No study shows that a recording brings you "closer to divine energy" or raises your ability to study, though it can help you settle into a quiet routine.

A sensible use

  • Play it at low volume, with no earphones in bed.
  • Use it as a signal for rest or study, the same time each day.
  • Thirty-two hours is not a session. It is a loop to leave running or to dip into.

An archangel, in the old texts, is a messenger. The message that matters here is simple: slow down and listen.
