360 Vr Deep Dream Tunnel Trip - Psychedelic Fractal Ayahuasca Dmt Experience 4K UltraHD
This three-minute video, published in March 2018 by the channel schizo604, is a 360-degree animation in 4K. It was made by an artist who goes by Schizo, with 360-degree visuals by TAS Visuals ("The Canyon") and music by Mobitex and Red Sun Rising. The description says it blends Mandelbulb 3D, a program for drawing fractals, with Google's Deep Dream. I could not watch it in a headset, so I cannot describe how it feels to dive in. Here is what the tools are, and a few cautions about the words in the title.
The ingredients
- Mandelbulb. A three-dimensional cousin of the Mandelbrot set, the famous fractal. It was first described in 2009 by Daniel White and Paul Nylander. Each zoom reveals new folds, towers and tunnels that repeat at smaller scales.
- Deep Dream. A Google program from 2015, created by the engineer Alexander Mordvintsev. It asks a trained image-recognition system to exaggerate whatever shapes it half-sees, so clouds sprout eyes, fur and spirals.
- 360-degree video. The picture wraps around the viewer. In a headset, you turn your head and the tunnel turns with you.
Why such images feel sacred
Spirals, tunnels, grids and endless repetition show up in the earliest art of humankind. Researchers who study visions of all kinds, from migraine to fever to deep meditation, have found that the brain tends to produce similar geometric patterns. The mandala, the labyrinth of Chartres and the Islamic tilework follow the same instinct: to see order inside endless variety. A fractal tunnel is a modern cousin of those old maps of the inner world.
About the title
The title mentions ayahuasca and DMT. The video is only an animation. It does not reproduce, and cannot replace, any plant experience. Ayahuasca is a brew used for generations in ceremonies in the Amazon basin, led by experienced healers. DMT is a controlled substance in many countries. This post makes no medical claims and gives no advice about using either. If you are curious, read about the traditions with respect and talk to a qualified professional first.
Watching it well
- Flashing colors and fast motion can bother people with photosensitive epilepsy. Skip it if that applies to you.
- Virtual reality can cause dizziness. Sit down, and stop if you feel unwell.
- Use the three minutes as a short meditation: keep breathing slowly and let your eyes rest on the center of the tunnel.
An old idea says that the path inward is a spiral. This little film is one more way of tracing it.
