Pick A Card | Your Future Self

Rider-Waite Tarot card representation of Justice, symbolizing division and the law

This is a nearly two-hour tarot reading by the channel Marion, divided into three groups, and its premise is that you pick a pile and learn who your future self is and what that version of you has to say. The description gives time stamps and invites viewers to book a personal reading. I did not watch it, so I cannot tell you what any of the groups hear. What I can do is take the question seriously on its own terms, because it is a better question than it first sounds.

Where tarot comes from

The first tarot decks appeared in northern Italy in the fifteenth century, probably in the 1440s, and were made for a card game, not for fortune telling. Wealthy families such as the Visconti and Sforza ordered gorgeous painted sets. The idea that the cards hold hidden wisdom came later. In 1781 a French writer, Antoine Court de Gébelin, claimed they were a surviving book of Egyptian wisdom. There was no evidence, but the notion stuck. The deck most readers use today, the Rider-Waite-Smith, was published in 1909 and drawn by the artist Pamela Colman Smith.

How "pick a card" works

These videos offer several groups of cards, and the viewer chooses the one that "calls" to them. The messages are written in general terms, so that they fit most people. This is the effect psychologists named after Barnum: we accept broad, flattering statements as personal. That does not mean a reading is worthless. A symbolic image can be a good mirror, giving you a reason to think about something you were avoiding.

Your future self

The idea of talking to your future self has real research behind it. In 2011 the psychologist Hal Hershfield and his colleagues showed people computer-aged images of themselves and found that they were afterward more willing to put money aside for retirement. Feeling connected to the person you will become changes your choices today. That is the best argument for the exercise, with or without cards.

Try this

Write a short letter from yourself ten years from now. What does that person thank you for? What do they wish you had stopped worrying about? Read it slowly. It costs nothing, and it may be wiser than any reading.

If you enjoy the cards, enjoy them as one enjoys a poem. Just keep your big decisions in your own hands.
