Sirius: Rising: The Occult Secrets of the Most Powerful Star! The Start ...

In this 28-minute video from August 2020, astrologer Lada Duncheva presents the rising of Sirius as the "most powerful star in astrology" and the start of a spiritual new year. I leave out the link to a talisman and her site. I could not listen to the audio, so I do not know her exact claims. Here is what Sirius is, why people have honored it for thousands of years, and what is still debated.

The star

Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major, is the brightest star in the night sky, with a magnitude of about minus 1.46. It lies only 8.6 light years from us. It is a double star: the bright Sirius A, and a faint companion, Sirius B, a white dwarf. The American telescope maker Alvan Graham Clark found the companion in 1862.

The heliacal rising

For part of the year Sirius is lost in the glare of the Sun. When it first appears again, just before dawn, astronomers call it the heliacal rising. In the Mediterranean world that happens in late July or August, and the exact date changes with latitude and the centuries.

Egypt and the Nile

  • The Egyptians called the star Sopdet, and the Greeks, Sothis.
  • Its return in the dawn sky came around the time the Nile began to flood, and it marked the new year, Wepet Renpet.
  • The Sothic cycle, of about 1,460 years, comes from the slight mismatch between the Egyptian calendar and the true year. Historians use it to date events.
  • The goddess Isis was linked with Sirius.

Rome and the "dog days"

The Greeks and Romans noticed that the hottest weeks of summer came when Sirius rose with the Sun. They called it the Dog Star, and the sultry time "dog days," from the Latin dies caniculares. The heat was blamed on the star, which is not true: summer heat depends on the tilt of the Earth.

The Dogon controversy

In 1976, Robert Temple wrote The Sirius Mystery, which argued that the Dogon people of Mali knew about Sirius B before telescopes. Many researchers, including astronomer Ian Ridpath, think the Dogon learned it from outsiders in the twentieth century. The claim is not accepted as proof.

A simple practice

  • Look east before dawn in late summer, if you live in the north, and find the brilliant star.
  • Think about how many peoples have looked at it before you.
  • Use it as a reminder to begin something new, at your own pace.

Sirius needs no guarantee of power. Its steady blue-white light has guided farmers, priests and sailors for thousands of years.
