Why metal?
In the Chinese system, the five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. They relate in two cycles: one of generation and one of control. In the cycle of control, fire melts metal. So a Metal Horse set against a Fire Horse year is a small thought experiment: what happens when the metal meets the flame?
The real Metal Horses
- The Metal Horse (Gengwu) came in 1930 and 1990. The next one will be 2050.
- The current year, 2026, belongs to the Fire Horse. The cards here are a variation on the theme, not a different calendar.
What metal means in tradition
- Order, precision and discipline.
- A sense of justice and of keeping one's word.
- Also rigidity: metal can break when it will not bend.
Joined to the Horse, that gives a rider with a clear course and a strong will. Tradition describes this combination as faster to decide and harder to persuade.
Metal in alchemy
Western alchemists also tied each of the seven metals to a planet: gold to the Sun, silver to the Moon, iron to Mars, copper to Venus, tin to Jupiter, lead to Saturn and quicksilver to Mercury. Fire was the tool for refining them. The old idea is the same in East and West: metal is shaped by fire, and what survives the fire is purer.
Reading the cards
As with the Fire Horse set, the images borrow the look of tarot. Try asking, in front of each card, one simple question: where am I rigid, and where do I need to bend?
A word of caution
Astrology and tarot are symbols for reflection, not forecasts. Don't let a card make decisions about your health, money or relationships.
The forge does not ask whether the metal wants to change. Fortunately, you can choose to.
