Ieialel: The Angel of Vision and Mental Victory
Sorrow has a way of narrowing the world. When the heart is heavy, the eyes seem to dim with it: colors fade, faces grow distant and every road looks like the same gray road. Old physicians and philosophers noticed this long ago, and many of them held that the sadness of the soul and the weakness of the eyes were linked.
In the Kabbalistic tradition of the seventy-two angels, one name stands for the healing of both: Ieialel, the angel of vision and mental victory.
Ieialel is invoked by those who wish to see clearly, in the physical sense and in the spiritual one. He is the angel who lifts the veil from the eyes of the weary and returns to them the lucidity of a mind at peace.
The Fifty-Eighth Name
The Shem HaMephorash, the "explicit name" of God, is a Kabbalistic teaching that draws seventy-two names of three letters from three verses of the Book of Exodus (14:19–21). Each name came to be associated with an angel who expresses one aspect of the divine power.
Ieialel is the fifty-eighth of these names. Its three Hebrew letters are Yod, Yod and Lamed, followed by the divine suffix "-el." The Yod is the smallest letter of the alphabet and the seed from which, tradition says, all others grow; the Lamed is the tallest, rising above the line like a tower.
Between the smallest and the highest, the name seems to describe a gaze that climbs. In later angelic tradition, the seventy-two angels are arranged in nine choirs, and Ieialel belongs to the choir of the Archangels, the messengers of great revelations.
In the system popularized by later French occultists, each angel rules five degrees of the zodiac, counting from the beginning of Aries. Following that scheme, Ieialel governs the degrees from 15° to 20° of Capricorn, the sign of Saturn, of mountains and of patient ascent.
It is a fitting home for an angel of sorrow overcome. Saturn, in the old astrology, was the planet of melancholy, and Renaissance thinkers such as Marsilio Ficino wrote at length about how the thoughtful soul can turn that dark weight into depth and discipline.
The Angel of the Healed Gaze
Tradition links Ieialel to the Sixth Psalm, in which the speaker cries out from exhaustion and distress and asks for deliverance. From this verse the angel received his reputation as a consoler. He is called upon to ease the heaviness of spirit, to lift stagnant and depressed states of mind, and to protect against those who confuse and mislead.
He is also asked for the healing of the eyes, both the bodily eyes and what the mystics call the inner eye. This is a figure the old traditions shared widely. Egyptian priests spoke of the eye of Horus, wounded and restored.
The Greeks told of the seer Tiresias, blind to the world but sighted in spirit. The Gospel speaks of the lamp of the body being the eye. In all of them, to see truly is a form of healing.
The Transparent Intellect
In the path of theurgy, Ieialel is described as the master of what some teachers call the transparent intellect. This is a mind that is clear like still water: it reflects things as they are, without the ripples of fear, vanity or wishful thinking. Such a mind is not cold. It is simply undisturbed, and therefore trustworthy.
The tradition says this clarity is protected by a kind of invisible shield. Emotional storms may rage around the seeker, yet judgment stays level. This is the victory the angel's name promises: not the defeat of an enemy, but the mastery of one's own inner weather.
His Esoteric Gifts
According to the angelic tradition, Ieialel is invoked above all for victory over sadness and for sharpness of mind. Those who work with him seek these gifts:
- Clarity of perception: seeing the truth of a situation, however tangled or deceptive its appearance.
- The alchemy of sorrow: turning the weight of grief into inner strength, as lead is turned to gold in the old symbolic art.
- Healing of the sight: relief for tired eyes and for a clouded outlook.
- Intellectual fortitude: the steadiness to study hard subjects, from mathematics to architecture, which the traditional lists of this angel mention.
Meditation: The Crystal Eye
To connect with Ieialel, the tradition suggests a simple meditation. Choose a quiet hour and a place where you will not be disturbed.
- Visualization: Imagine a perfectly clear crystal sphere appearing before your forehead. A beam of brilliant white light enters your eyes, passes through the sphere and spreads out into a calm, penetrating radiance.
- Breath: Breathe slowly, and with each exhalation let go of a small portion of heaviness, like dust leaving a window.
- Invocation: Say silently, "Ieialel, heal the sight. Grant me the vision of the sage and the clarity of the master. Let my mind be a mirror for the stars and my eyes see only the truth."
- Action: Spend half an hour today on a task that demands close attention, such as mending something by hand, copying a difficult passage or putting a cluttered room in order.
