Umabel: The Angel of Friendship and Affinity
"A friend is another self," said Aristotle, and he devoted two entire books of his Nicomachean Ethics to friendship. Cicero wrote a treatise on the subject, and Montaigne said of his lost friend Étienne de La Boétie, "because it was he, because it was I." Few themes have been prized so steadily by philosophers of every age.
In the Kabbalistic tradition of the seventy-two angels, a name stands for this bond and for the quiet harmony that links people and things: Umabel, the angel of friendship and affinity.

The Sixty-First Name
The Shem HaMephorash, the "explicit name" of God, is a Kabbalistic teaching that draws seventy-two names of three letters from three verses of the Book of Exodus (14:19–21). Each name came to be associated with an angel who expresses one aspect of the divine power.
Umabel is the sixty-first of these names. Its three Hebrew letters are Vav, Mem and Bet, followed by the divine suffix "-el." The Vav is the letter that means "and," the hook that joins one thing to another. It is a fitting first letter for an angel of friendship.
In later angelic tradition, the seventy-two angels are arranged in nine choirs, and Umabel belongs to the choir of the Archangels, the messengers who carry the great revelations.
In the system popularized by later French occultists, each angel rules five degrees of the zodiac, counting from the beginning of Aries. Following that scheme, Umabel governs the first five degrees of Aquarius, from 0° to 5°. Tradition links Umabel to a verse of the 113th Psalm, which praises the name of the Lord. From it the angel gained his reputation as a bringer of concord. He is asked to help one find real friends, those who share one's interests and values, and to preserve those bonds through changing seasons.
Stories of faithful friendship appear in every culture. The Greeks told of Damon and Pythias, who offered his life to guarantee his friend's return. The Bible tells of David and Jonathan, whose souls were "knit together." The Pythagoreans, according to ancient writers, treated friendship as a spiritual discipline, a path in which two people shape each other toward the good. Umabel belongs to this noble family of ideas.
The Affinity of Things
Umabel's second domain is the study of nature. Traditional lists name him as a patron of those who work with astronomy and physics, the sciences that look at the order of the heavens and the laws of matter. This link is not accidental. The old philosophers believed that friendship and knowledge were two forms of the same attraction.
Empedocles, one of the first Greek thinkers to describe the elements, taught that two forces govern the world: Love, which draws things together, and Strife, which pulls them apart. The alchemists spoke of a sympathy between substances, and Renaissance thinkers saw a hidden kinship between the stars, the metals and the human heart.
