Eiael: The Angel of Transformation and Spiritual Longevity
"No man ever steps in the same river twice," said Heraclitus, "for it is not the same river, and he is not the same man." The Greek philosopher saw change as the law of the world. Ovid, centuries later, gathered the myths of his age into a single poem and called it the Metamorphoses, a long book of people who become trees, birds, stars and stones.
The alchemists summed up the same intuition in a motto: solve et coagula, dissolve and bring together. Nothing precious is made without first being undone. In the Kabbalistic tradition of the seventy-two angels, a name stands for the wisdom of this passage: Eiael, the angel of transformation and spiritual longevity.

The Sixty-Seventh Name
The Shem HaMephorash, the "explicit name" of God, is a Kabbalistic teaching that draws seventy-two names of three letters from three verses of the Book of Exodus (14:19–21). Each name came to be associated with an angel who expresses one aspect of the divine power.
Eiael is the sixty-seventh of these names. Its three Hebrew letters are Aleph, Yod and Ayin, followed by the divine suffix "-el." The Ayin is the letter whose name means "eye," so the name seems to hold a gaze that sees through time.
In later angelic tradition, the seventy-two angels are arranged in nine choirs, and Eiael belongs to the last of them, the choir of the Angels. These are the ones nearest to the human world, the companions of ordinary life.
In the system popularized by later French occultists, each angel rules five degrees of the zodiac, counting from the beginning of Aries. Following that scheme, Eiael governs the first five degrees of Pisces, from 0° to 5°. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, the threshold where one cycle ends and the next prepares to begin.
The two fish of its image swim in opposite directions yet are bound by a single cord. It is an apt picture of change that holds together endings and beginnings.
The Angel of Passage
Tradition links Eiael to a verse of the 37th Psalm: "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." From this line the angel received his role as a consoler. He is invoked for comfort in times of trial, for success in study, and for a long and fruitful life.
Stories of transformation appear in every culture. The caterpillar that retreats into its chrysalis and emerges as a winged creature has been a symbol of the soul since antiquity. The Greek word psyche meant both "soul" and "butterfly." In Egypt, the scarab beetle rolling the sun across the sky stood for the rebirth of life.
In the Gospel of John, a seed must fall into the ground and die if it is to bear fruit. Eiael belongs to this family of images.

This vision of cycles gives a sense of calm. A person who understands that every age passes does not cling to any one moment. Perhaps this is the root of the longevity the angel promises. It is not just a long life, but a life that bends without breaking and knows how to renew itself.
