Atalanta Fugiens, Emblem 28: The King in the Bath

Atalanta Fugiens, Emblem 28: The King in the Bath

A crowned, bearded king reclines inside a closed wooden chamber. A fire burns below the floor, steam rises on both sides, and a small lamp hangs on the wall behind him. He lies naked and still. Outside, the roofs and a church tower of a town rise in the background.

This is the twenty-eighth emblem of Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens, and its motto says: the king bathes, sitting in the hot room, and is freed of black bile by Pharut.

The book was printed in 1617 at Oppenheim. It has fifty emblems, and each one joins an engraving, a Latin verse, a prose discourse and a fugue for three voices. The engravings are attributed to the workshop of Matthäus Merian. Maier, a physician at the court of Emperor Rudolf II, wanted the book to be seen, read and sung.

The Motto

The Latin line gives a short story. A king takes a bath in a sweating chamber. He sits there, the heat does its work, and he is healed of black bile. The verse names a figure called Pharut as the one who frees him.

The picture shows the king at rest. He is not fighting. He has placed himself in the heat and waits.

The Hot Room

The Latin word is laconicum. It names the hot dry chamber of the ancient bath, a kind of sauna that Romans took from Greek habit. The name recalls Laconia, the region of Sparta. People sat in it to sweat out illness and tiredness.

In the engraving, the chamber is closed and warmed from below, like a stove. The king is in the middle of the heat, sealed from the street.

Black Bile

Old medicine taught that the body held four humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. Too much black bile was blamed for heaviness of the spirit, which the Greeks called melancholy, "black bile."

A king freed from black bile is a king freed from gloom. This is a very old idea of healing: the dark matter is drawn out and the person is lightened.

The Bath in the Work

Alchemists loved the image of the bath. A warm bath was a gentle way to heat a flask, and a famous tradition credits Maria the Jewess with the water bath, still called the bain-marie in cooking. A king in a bath fit that scene perfectly. The matter, the royal substance, sits in a warm place and slowly changes.

The tradition read the bath as a stage of purification. The king, who stands for the perfected metal, must be washed of his dross before he can shine. In that reading, the heat is not a punishment. It is the way the impurity is brought to the surface.

A Reading for Today

The picture invites us to think about rest and warmth. Many people try to heal by effort alone, pushing against sadness. The emblem offers a gentler path: sit still, let the heat do its work, and let what is heavy come out on its own.

A king who has the whole country on his shoulders must also learn to put it down and sit in the hot room.

The Fugue

Each emblem in the book has its own music. The fugue is written for three voices, and each voice follows the one before it, which is where the name comes from: fuga means flight or pursuit. The title recalls Atalanta, who raced her suitors until Hippomenes dropped golden apples in her path.

Maier used the old tale as a frame for fifty riddles. Modern singers have recorded the pieces, so anyone can hear them while looking at the engraving.

Contemplating the Emblem

For those who wish to work with this image:

  • Look at the king inside the closed chamber and the fire beneath it.
  • Ask what you carry that you could put down, as a king puts down a crown.
  • Find a warm, quiet place to sit for ten minutes without doing anything.
  • Notice what rises to the surface when you rest.

A Word of Care

Black bile is an old theory, not a modern medical fact. Persistent sadness is serious, and anyone who feels it should speak with a doctor or a trusted professional. Heat treatments can be dangerous for some people. The emblem is a symbol of cleansing and rest, not a treatment.

Closing

A king, a chamber, a small flame. Maier turned a scene from ancient medicine into a picture of the Work. For the seeker, the emblem offers a calm thought: even a crowned head needs to sit in the heat for a time, and be freed of what weighs it down.
