Atalanta Fugiens, Emblem 17: The Fourfold Orbit Ruled by Fire
Four great spheres hang one above another in the air over a river landscape. Each is covered with the wavy lines of flame. Below them, a village stands among bare trees, and a boat with several figures drifts across the water. This is the seventeenth emblem of Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens, and its motto says: a fourfold orbit, and this fire rules the work.
The book was printed in 1617 at Oppenheim. It has fifty emblems, and each one joins an engraving, a Latin verse, a prose discourse and a fugue for three voices. The engravings are attributed to the workshop of Matthäus Merian. Maier, a physician at the court of Emperor Rudolf II, wanted his readers to see the whole world as one connected system of fire.
The Motto
The Latin line speaks of a circuit of four parts, governed by one fire. The number four and the word fire are the two things to hold on to.
The picture follows the line closely. Four round bodies stack in a column, and the same pattern of flame covers all of them.
The Four Elements
The old Greek philosopher Empedocles taught that everything is made of four roots: earth, water, air and fire. Aristotle gave them qualities. Fire is hot and dry, air hot and wet, water cold and wet, earth cold and dry. Anything in nature could be described as a mixture of the four.
Alchemists inherited this scheme. To change a substance, they believed, one had to shift its balance among the elements. The task was to separate them and bring them back in a better order.
The Fire Within Each
The strange feature of the emblem is that all four spheres are drawn with flame. Earth, water, air and fire are all shown as fiery. The picture says that fire is present in each element, as its hidden heart.
The tradition liked this thought. It said that fire is the one active principle, and the other three are what it works upon. In the Work, the careful tending of the furnace was what set everything in motion.
The Fourfold Path
The number four also appears in the stages of the Work. Texts often list four colors: the black, the white, the yellow and the red. Later writers kept only three, but the full list has an old and respectable history.
Maier does not say that the four spheres are the four colors. This is one possible reading, offered because the number matches. Whichever reading is chosen, the column of spheres suggests a ladder, with fire running up its length.
A Reading for Today
The emblem speaks to anyone who has to keep many things in balance. A life has its earth, which is its body and work, its water, which is feeling, its air, which is thought, and its fire, which is will and desire. When one is missing, the whole suffers.
The picture's quiet message is that the fire is shared. The same warmth runs through the practical and the dreamy parts of life. If it is tended, all four can turn together.
The Engraving
The spheres are drawn with fine, curving lines, like the grain in polished wood. They overlap slightly, so the column looks like a single object made of four parts. Under them, the world is small and calm. The thatched roofs of a village sit near the bank, and a boat with a standing figure and a few passengers crosses the river. The contrast between the huge fiery bodies and the little human scene gives the picture its strength.
The Fugue
The fugue that goes with this emblem is written for three voices. The voices enter one after another and repeat the same line, as if each chased the one before. That is the sense of the title. In the myth, Atalanta was a swift runner, and Hippomenes won her by dropping golden apples to make her stop. Maier turned that chase into music and into a series of images. Modern recordings let us hear it today.
Contemplating the Emblem
For those who wish to work with this image:
- Look at the four spheres and name each with an element.
- Ask which of the four is weakest in your life at the moment.
- Think of the shared fire that could feed all of them, whether passion, purpose or care.
- Draw four circles on a page and shade them with the same pattern, as the engraver did.
Closing
Four burning spheres above a quiet river. Maier gave the old theory of the elements a single flame at its heart. For the seeker, the teaching is clear: tend the fire, and the four turn together.
