Poimandres: The Vision of the Divine Mind

Hermes Trismegistus Mosaic

In the quietus of profound meditation, when the bodily senses fall away into the abyss of slumber and the spirit awakens to its own immortal luminosity, Hermes Trismegistus encountered the vast, boundless presence of Poimandres—the Mind of Sovereignty. This is not the fragile intellect of mortal men, circumscribed by the sinews of time and decay, but the foundational Nous, the inexhaustible architect of all that is, was, and shall endlessly be.

The first tractate of the Corpus Hermeticum violently shatters the mundane illusions of the waking world, plunging the initiate directly into the cosmogonic theater. Here, the Supreme Mind reveals the genesis of the cosmos as an emanation of pure, radiant Light clashing with a chaotic, downward-spiraling Moisture. From the primal Word (Logos)—a luminous son of the Divine Mind—the elements were forcefully untangled from the primordial waters, weaving the grand, cyclical architecture of the planetary spheres. It is a breathtaking revelation: the universe is not a dead, material edifice, but a living, breathing hierarchy of divine emanations, trembling with intentionality.

Yet, the ineffable tragedy and ultimate triumph of humanity lie within the great descent. The Primal Man (Anthropos), bearing the unalloyed likeness of the Father, gazed downward and became enamored by the reflection of his own eternal beauty in the dark mirror of lower, material Nature. Descending through the seven celestial spheres, he was passionately embraced by Nature, becoming a dual being. He remains immortal in his fiery, spiritual essence, yet tragically bound within a mortal, decaying shell—a king enslaved by his own reflection.

The Hermetic vision, however, is not merely a melancholy myth of entrapment; it is a profound and rigorous roadmap for the soul's perilous return. To ascend through the spheres is to systematically strip away the planetary garments accumulated during the fall: the illusion of waxing and waning (the Moon), the machinery of cunning (Mercury), the blinding lust of desire (Venus), the arrogance of earthly dominion (the Sun), the rashness of martial audacity (Mars), the gluttony for wealth (Jupiter), and the falsehood that ensnares the soul in sorrow (Saturn).

Only by casting off these leaden weights can the soul arrive, naked and resplendent, at the Ogdoad—the eighth sphere, the realm of the fixed stars. Here, the initiate joins the celestial chorus in praising the Supreme Father, vibrating in perfect resonance with the singular, universal Word.

This is the eternal, reverberating call of Poimandres: to remember the Light from whence you were forged, to violently awaken from the heavy stupor of materiality, and to boldly reclaim your sovereign heritage among the stars.
