Stanza II: The Idea of the Universe
Stanza II: The Idea of the Universe
If Stanza I was absolute rest, Stanza II is deep gestation—the latent pulse just before the cosmic clock strikes the hour of creation.
...Where were the builders, the luminous sons of Manvantaric dawn? ... In the unknown darkness in their Ah-hi Paranishpanna. The producers of form from no-form—the root of the world—the Devamatri and Svabhavat, rested in the bliss of non-being.
...Where was silence? Where the ears to sense it? No, there was neither silence nor sound; nought save ceaseless eternal breath, which knows itself not.
The hour had not yet struck; the ray had not yet flashed into the germ; the Matripadma (Mother-Lotus) had not yet swollen.
Her heart had not yet opened for the one ray to enter, thence to fall, as three into four, into the lap of Maya.
The seven sons were not yet born from the web of light. Darkness alone was father-mother, Svabhavat; and Svabhavat was in darkness.
These two are the Germ, and the Germ is one. The Universe was still concealed in the Divine thought and the Divine bosom.
Decoding the Symbols
The Builders: This does not refer to an anthropomorphic god, but to the forces of nature, physical laws, and cosmic intelligences that will structure matter. They are still in a latent state ("in the unknown darkness").
The Eternal Breath: The perpetual movement of the cosmos. Blavatsky postulates that even in absolute nothingness, there is a vibration, a base energy tha
t is the "breath" of space. The Ray and the Germ: The "Germ" is the point of pure potential, and the "Ray" is cosmic will or spirit. Creation can only begin when that Ray fertilizes the Germ.
The Matripadma (Mother-Lotus): The lotus represents the material cosmos. Here it is said that the flower "had not yet swollen"; the bud containing the entire material universe is still closed beneath the waters of invisible space.
