The 33 Steps of the Serpent: Vertebra 18 - The Mirror of Truth
The human spine is usually counted as thirty-three vertebrae: seven in the neck, twelve in the upper and middle back, five in the lower back, five fused in the sacrum and about four small ones in the tailbone. Many esoteric teachers have seen in this number a sacred ladder.
Thirty-three is the age traditionally given for Jesus at his death, and the number of degrees in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. In this series, each vertebra is treated as a step on that ladder of ascent.
The eighteenth step lies in the thoracic region, the long middle section of the back that holds the ribs and shelters the heart and lungs. It has been given a striking name: the mirror of truth.
The Ladder of the Spine
In yogic tradition, the spine is the path of Kundalini, the coiled energy said to rest at its base. As it rises through the central channel, it passes through the chakras, centers of the subtle body. In the Bible, Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with angels going up and down. Esoteric writers have often joined these images, seeing the spine as a living Jacob's ladder.
Each step, in this view, represents a stage of inner growth. The lower vertebrae relate to grounding and survival, the middle ones to emotion and will, and the upper ones to expression, insight and union.
The Thoracic Region
The thoracic vertebrae form the back wall of the chest. Each is joined to a pair of ribs, creating a protective cage around the heart and lungs. This region moves with every breath. In the subtle anatomy of yoga, it lies near the solar plexus and the heart centers, places linked with personal power, love and compassion.
A vertebra in this area stands, symbolically, between the will and the heart. It is a place where the question of who we truly are becomes pressing.
Why a Mirror of Truth
A mirror shows us what is there, not what we wish to see. To call this step the mirror of truth is to say that, at this stage of the inner journey, the seeker begins to see the self more honestly. Old defenses, excuses and masks become harder to keep.
Many traditions describe such a moment. The ancient Greek maxim at Delphi said know thyself. Mystics speak of a purification in which hidden faults come to light. Psychologists speak of insight, the sudden clarity that changes how we understand our lives.
The Discomfort of Clarity
Seeing clearly is not always pleasant. When the mirror shows our fears, our patterns of blame or the ways we have betrayed our own values, the first reaction may be resistance. Yet this honesty is the condition for real change.
The image of fire rising through the spine expresses this process. It burns away what is false, leaving what is real. This is a symbolic description, not a physical event, and it unfolds gently for most people through patient practice.
The Planetary Moment
Astrologers have drawn attention to the conjunction of Saturn and Neptune in early 2026 near the first degree of Aries, the beginning of the zodiac. Saturn is associated with structure and reality, Neptune with dreams, dissolution and spirit. Their meeting is often read as a time when old illusions dissolve and new forms must be built.
Whatever one thinks of astrology, the symbolism fits this step well. The mirror of truth asks us to let go of illusions and to build our lives on what is genuinely ours.
A Simple Practice
This practice can be done sitting comfortably with a straight back:
- Breathe slowly and bring attention to the middle of your back, between the shoulder blades and a little below.
- Imagine a clear crystal there, reflecting light in all directions.
- Ask yourself quietly: what do I already know about myself that I avoid seeing?
- Exhale, release tension in the back, and let the question rest without forcing an answer.
If any practice brings strong anxiety or physical discomfort, stop and rest. Back pain or unusual symptoms always deserve the attention of a health professional.
Living From the Center
The goal of this step is not harsh self-judgment, but integrity. When what we think, feel and do come into alignment, life gains steadiness. We react less to the pressures of the world and act more from our own center, as if our truth were radiating from the spine outward.
Closing
The eighteenth step of the serpent's ladder is the mirror of truth. In the middle of the back, near the shelter of the heart, it invites us to see ourselves clearly and to let go of masks that no longer serve.
The journey up the spine is long, but each honest look in the mirror brings the seeker one step closer to wholeness, and to a life lived from the quiet strength of its own core.
