The Plunge into the Unconscious

A single, solid Yang line is trapped between two yielding Yin lines. This is Kan (☵), the trigram of Water, the Abyss, and the Middle Son. Kan is the perilous gorge, the deep, dark river that cuts through the foundation of the earth. It is the most challenging and melancholic of the eight trigrams, traditionally associated with danger, melancholy, and the depths of winter.

Yet, in the Lux Esoterica tradition, Kan is not a symbol of defeat. It is the necessary descent into the underworld. The solid line trapped in the center represents the indestructible spark of truth hidden within the dark waters of the unconscious mind.

The Courage to Flow

Water teaches the ultimate lesson of survival: it does not fight the rock; it flows around it, eventually wearing it down to sand. When Kan dominates a reading, the seeker is plunged into a situation where struggle is futile. The only way out of the abyss is through it.

To navigate Kan, one must cultivate absolute internal sincerity. The outer world may be treacherous, but the inner light must remain focused. It is a time for shadow work, for facing the fears that lurk in the subterranean caverns of the psyche. By surrendering to the flow, and trusting the solid core of the self, the initiate learns to breathe underwater. The abyss is only a grave if you refuse to swim.
