"I'M Notorious, Fearless, Brave; And This Is Why I'M Here!" | Ralph Smart

"I'M Notorious, Fearless, Brave; And This Is Why I'M Here!" | Ralph Smart

A fifteen-minute video from the Infinite Waters channel (Diving Deep), published in May 2020, with a talk by Ralph Smart titled "I'm Notorious, Fearless, Brave; and This Is Why I'm Here!" The description is almost all links to his book Feel Alive II, a Patreon, clothing, and paid consultations. I could not access the spoken text, so I cannot say what he argues. This post gives context on courage and on this kind of self-help speaker.

Who is Ralph Smart

Smart is a British-born speaker and author whose channel offers talks on spirituality, mindset, and personal power. He sells books, memberships, and one-to-one sessions. That does not make his message false, but it does mean his channel is also a business, and it is wise to remember that when a talk ends with an offer.

What courage is

Aristotle defined courage as a middle point between cowardice and recklessness. The brave person fears what should be feared, but acts anyway. In 1894 Mark Twain put it in a line from Pudd'nhead Wilson: courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear. The title of the video, with its list of adjectives, sounds like a declaration of identity. Declarations can motivate, but courage shows up in acts.

How fear shrinks

Psychology has a well-tested method for it: gradual exposure. You list what scares you, from least to most, and approach each step in small doses, staying until the fear drops. It is the basis of treatment for phobias and anxiety. The brain learns, by direct experience, that the danger was smaller than predicted. Words alone rarely produce that learning.

The myth of the fearless

People who seem fearless usually feel fear, but have practiced acting with it. Anyone who claims they never feel it is either exaggerating or is describing a different condition. The old heroes of myth, Odysseus among them, wept and trembled and went on.

A small exercise

Choose one thing you have been avoiding, something modest: a call, a conversation, a first class. Break it into the smallest first step, and do it within 48 hours. Notice what the fear does afterward. That is better evidence than any speech.
