How to Win Anybody's Heart You Admire & Influence Them | Ralph Smart
Ralph Smart, on his channel Infinite Waters, offers in this nineteen-minute video from July 2020 a talk on how to win the heart of someone you admire and influence them. The description is mostly links to his book and Patreon, which I leave out. I could not listen to the audio, so I do not know his advice. Here is what the psychology of attraction and influence says, and where the line falls between charm and manipulation.
The classic book
In 1936, Dale Carnegie published How to Win Friends and Influence People, which has sold tens of millions of copies. Its advice is simple: become genuinely interested in other people, smile, remember names, listen more than you talk, and never criticize openly. Almost ninety years later, much of it still holds.
What research confirms
- Mere exposure. In 1968, Robert Zajonc showed that we tend to like what we see more often. Familiarity builds comfort.
- Similarity. We like people who share our interests and values.
- Reciprocity. Robert Cialdini described it as one of six principles of influence: when someone does us a favor, we want to return it. Small, real kindnesses matter.
- Liking through listening. People feel close to those who make them feel heard. Studies of conversation find that asking follow-up questions makes you more liked.
- Warmth and competence. Social psychologists find that people judge others first on warmth, and then on ability.
The ethical line
Influence becomes manipulation when you hide your intentions, invent a persona, or use someone's insecurities against them. A simple test: would you be comfortable if the other person knew exactly what you were doing and why? If yes, it is probably respectful. If not, stop.
The inner side
Many "spiritual" versions of this advice say that working on yourself, with calm and confidence, makes you more attractive. There is something in that: anxiety about approval tends to push people away. But you cannot control another person's feelings, and no technique guarantees that someone will like you. A healthy aim is to be honest, kind and clear, and to accept the answer.
Three small things to try
- Ask one real question today and listen to the whole answer.
- Offer a small, genuine compliment about something specific.
- Say what you want plainly, and leave room for a "no."
