They Want You Miserable In Lockdown For 18 Months

They Want You Miserable In Lockdown For 18 Months | An Eye Opening Vid...

The title is loud: "They want you miserable in lockdown for 18 months." The video itself, on Ralph Smart's Infinite Waters channel, goes by the name "They want you in lockdown forever" and runs just over twenty-one minutes. It went online in May 2020. Its description is a list of links to a book, a membership and a store, and says nothing about the argument. I could not listen to the audio, so I will not put words in the speaker's mouth. What I can do is look at the claim in the title and the number inside it.

Where "18 months" may come from

In mid-March 2020, a modeling team at Imperial College London published a report on how to slow the spread of the new coronavirus. It said that strict measures might have to be kept up, on and off, until a vaccine arrived, which could take eighteen months or more. That sentence traveled around the world and gave many people the number. It was a projection about a hypothetical scenario, not a plan. Real policies changed from country to country and from month to month.

What lockdown did to people

Whatever one thinks about the rules, the strain was real. Studies from 2020 and after found increases in anxiety, depression, loneliness and sleep trouble in many places, especially among young people, those living alone and those who lost work. Others found that people adapted better than expected. The picture is mixed, and honest observers admit it.

"They" want you miserable

This is the hard part. Saying that someone deliberately wants a population to be unhappy is a claim about intent, and intent is the most difficult thing to prove. Governments made mistakes, contradicted each other and acted under pressure and fear. Some people profited from the crisis. That is different from a shared plan to keep everyone in misery. When a message names a vague "they," it is wise to ask who exactly, with what proof, and what they gain.

Keeping your own mind

The old Stoics, who lived through plague and war, taught a simple discipline: separate what you can control from what you cannot. You cannot control a government's decision. You can control your sleep, your movement, your calls to friends, and what you feed your attention. In the dark months of 2020, that advice was worth more than any theory about hidden plans.

Fear gives a strong story to anyone who wants to be heard. Check the sources, and then breathe.
