10 Awakening Symptoms You Should Never Ignore! | Ralph Smart
"10 Awakening Symptoms You Should NEVER Ignore!" is the title of this twenty-six-minute video from Ralph Smart's Infinite Waters channel, posted in June 2020. Its description is all links to a book, a membership and a shop, and says nothing of the list itself. I could not hear the audio, so I will not reproduce his ten points. The title, though, brings up a question worth treating with care: what happens to people who say they are "awakening," and when should they not ignore it?
What people mean by awakening
The word covers many experiences: a sudden sense of unity with everything, a loss of interest in old goals, intense sensitivity, vivid dreams, odd sleep, waves of emotion, a feeling of being watched over. Mystics in many traditions have described something similar. The Spanish poet and friar John of the Cross, in the sixteenth century, wrote of the "dark night of the soul," a painful stage in which the old certainties collapse before a new clarity arrives.
When it is not only spiritual
Here is the part you should never ignore. Many of the signs listed in videos like this, such as insomnia, anxiety, hearing or seeing things, deep exhaustion, heart palpitations and a sense of unreality, are also symptoms of medical and psychological conditions. Thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, anxiety disorders, depression, and in some cases the first signs of psychosis can look like an awakening from the inside. In the 1980s the psychiatrists Stanislav and Christina Grof used the term "spiritual emergency" for crises with a spiritual flavor, and argued that they should be accompanied with understanding. They never said a medical check is unnecessary.
A sensible checklist
- See a doctor if symptoms are physical or last for weeks, especially sleep loss, chest pain or dizziness.
- Talk to a mental health professional if you hear voices, feel paranoid, or cannot tell what is real.
- Seek urgent help if you have thoughts of hurting yourself.
- Keep your routine: sleep, food, work, friends. It anchors you while you explore.
- Be careful with any teacher who tells you not to see a doctor.
Growth that holds
Whatever you call it, real inner change usually shows in ordinary life: more patience, more honesty, kinder relationships. If an "awakening" leaves you isolated, frightened or unable to function, listen to that signal. Wisdom traditions always asked for balance, and that is not a bad compass.
