What Every Woman Should Know About Men

What Every Woman Should Know About Men

A sixteen-minute talk by Teal Swan, from October 2019, called "What Every Woman Should Know About Men." The description says relations between men and women are turbulent: feminism brought positive changes, but "the pendulum swung too far," and now women have to "become men" because of the passivity instilled in men, adding to the confusion between the sexes. It also promotes a relationship kit and a paid membership. I could not access the spoken text, so I do not know what she tells women about men. This post offers context and a few caveats.

Who is Teal Swan

Swan is an American spiritual teacher with a large online following. She has also drawn serious criticism over the years, including from former followers and in a 2022 documentary, The Deep End, which examined her teaching and community. It is wise to read her claims as one person's views, not as established findings.

Do men and women really differ that much?

The research is more nuanced than "men are like this, women are like that." In 2005, the psychologist Janet Hyde reviewed dozens of meta-analyses and proposed the "gender similarities hypothesis": for most psychological traits, the differences between the sexes are small or close to zero, and individuals vary far more within each sex than between them. There are some average differences, for example in physical aggression and in interest in things versus people, but they do not describe any single man or woman.

Popular books on the subject

John Gray's Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (1992) sold millions of copies on the idea of two different emotional "languages." The linguist Deborah Tannen, in You Just Don't Understand (1990), pointed to differences in conversational style, such as a tendency in some men to offer solutions while some women look for connection. Both books help people notice patterns, and both are criticized for overgeneralizing.

What helps in relationships

Studies by John Gottman suggest that what predicts a lasting relationship is not gender but behavior: listening, respect, repairing arguments, and avoiding contempt. If one partner feels they must "act like a man" or "carry everything," the issue is better treated as a conversation about roles and expectations between two people.

A sensible way to take it

Take whatever resonates as a question, not a rule: what do I expect from the man or men in my life, and where did I learn it? The answers will be more useful than any general portrait.
