Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn - 4th / 5th July - Rising above your Karma
Astrologer Bracha Goldsmith discusses in this video of nearly ten minutes, posted in June 2020, the lunar eclipse in Capricorn of July 4 and 5, which she describes as the last of a series of eclipses in Cancer and Capricorn over about eighteen months, a time of completion and culmination. She also speaks of "rising above your karma" and of Capricorn's love of ethical and honest structures. I could not listen to the audio, so I do not know the details of her reading. Here is what is known about the eclipse itself and how astrologers read it.
What happened in the sky
- The lunar eclipse of July 5, 2020 (July 4 in the Americas) was a penumbral eclipse. The Moon passed through the faint outer part of Earth's shadow, so it dimmed only slightly. Many people could not see any change with the naked eye.
- It peaked in the early hours of July 5 by universal time, and it was visible from the Americas, Africa and parts of Europe.
- An eclipse of the Moon occurs only at full Moon, when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up. The next one came on November 30, 2020.
The Cancer and Capricorn axis
Eclipses come in families that fall on the same two signs for about a year and a half, because the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path slowly shift backward through the zodiac. From early 2019 through mid 2020, the eclipses fell on the Cancer-Capricorn axis. Astrologers see Cancer as home, family and feeling, and Capricorn as work, duty and structure, so the series is read as a lesson about balancing private life and public responsibility.
Karma and Capricorn
- In astrology, Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of time, limits and consequences. The tradition ties Saturn to karma, the idea that actions bring results.
- The advice that follows is practical: finish what is unfinished, keep promises and build things that last.
A sober note
Eclipses have been tracked for thousands of years. Babylonian astronomers predicted them using the Saros cycle of about 18 years. Their effect on human affairs has never been shown in controlled tests. In 1985, physicist Shawn Carlson published a double-blind test in Nature in which astrologers did no better than chance.
Using it as a mirror
- Ask yourself what in your life feels complete, and what needs to end.
- Make one honest, concrete promise and keep it.
- Do not make major decisions on an eclipse date alone.
The sky offers a calendar of pauses. What we do with them is up to us.
