What's My Story? Life After My Iboga Experience | Awakening
In this sixteen-minute video from February 2020, Olivia Kissper shares her story of life after an iboga experience, as part of her "Awakening" series. I could not listen to the audio, so I do not know what she went through or what changed for her. I leave out the links to lessons and ASMR videos. Here is some background on iboga: what it is, where it comes from, and the risks that anyone curious should know.
The plant
Iboga is the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub of the rainforests of Central Africa, mainly Gabon, Cameroon and the Congo. Its main active compound is ibogaine. For centuries, the Bwiti tradition of Gabon has used it in initiation ceremonies that last through the night. Gabon has treated it as a national heritage plant.
From the forest to the laboratory
- Ibogaine was first isolated in 1901 by French chemists.
- In 1962, a young American named Howard Lotsof noticed that a dose took away his craving for heroin, and he spent decades promoting its study.
- Small studies and many personal reports suggest it may help some people with addiction. Large, controlled trials are still missing.
The risks
This part matters most. Ibogaine can disturb the rhythm of the heart, especially in people with heart conditions or low potassium or magnesium, and in combination with other drugs. Deaths have been reported, often connected to unsupervised use. It is a controlled substance in the United States and in several other countries, though some places allow clinical treatment. Anyone who thinks about it should speak with a doctor first.
Telling one's story
Many people who have intense experiences say the hard part comes later: how to live differently on an ordinary Tuesday. Researchers on psychedelics call it integration. These habits tend to help:
- Write the experience down soon after, then read it again after a month.
- Talk with someone who listens without judging, ideally a therapist.
- Pick one small change and keep it for ninety days.
- Be wary of anyone who sells the experience as a cure-all.
An awakening, whatever its source, shows its worth in how you treat people and how you spend your days.
