Capricorn Full Moon Lunar Eclipse July 4-5, Building Unity [Astrology Nu...

This video by astrologer Tania Gabrielle, from the summer of 2020, is titled "Capricorn Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, July 4-5: Building Unity." I could not listen to the audio, so I cannot say what she reads in the sky. What I can offer is what the eclipse was, what the old astrological tradition says about a Capricorn Full Moon, and where the facts end and interpretation begins.

The astronomy

The eclipse was a penumbral one. That means the Moon passed through the faint outer shadow of the Earth, not the dark inner cone, so it dimmed only slightly and many observers noticed nothing at all. The greatest point came in the early hours of July 5, 2020, and it was visible from the Americas, parts of Africa and southwestern Europe. It was the third of four penumbral lunar eclipses that year. The Full Moon fell at about thirteen degrees of Capricorn, opposite the Sun in Cancer.

What a Capricorn Full Moon means in astrology

Capricorn is the sign of the mountain goat, ruled by Saturn, the old god of time and limits. It stands for structure, duty, patience and long-term work. Cancer, its opposite, stands for home, family, memory and feeling. Astrologers read this Full Moon as a meeting of two needs: security and emotional belonging, public responsibility and private shelter. A Full Moon, they say, brings things to light. An eclipse, in the old tradition, sharpens that effect.

In 2020 Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto were all in Capricorn, which made the sign a favorite subject of astrologers that year. Many of them tied it to the great events of the time: the pandemic, economic shock, and arguments over institutions.

Unity: the theme of the video

The date was also Independence Day in the United States, which may be one reason for the focus on unity. Whether a lunar eclipse can actually bring people together is not something anyone has shown. There is no scientific evidence that the Moon's phases or eclipses affect human affairs. As a symbol, though, the Moon at its fullest is a fine invitation to pause and ask what, in your own life, needs to be brought into the open.

A practice for any Full Moon

  • Step outside at night and look at the Moon for a few minutes.
  • Write down one thing you want to let go of and one you want to build.
  • Make one small, concrete promise to someone close to you.

The ancients watched the sky to mark time and to remember that life moves in cycles. That habit alone is worth keeping, whatever one believes about the stars.
