The Daily Life of a Buddhist Monk: A Documentary

The Daily Life Of A Monk Documentary (Routine of a Buddhist Monk In Thai...

This 16-minute documentary, published in May 2020 by Nick Keomahavong, shows a day in the life of a Buddhist monk at the Papae Meditation Retreat in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The description says the daily schedule includes the alms round in the village, chores done as mindfulness practice, and meditation. I could not listen to the narration, so I do not know the rest of the schedule. Here is what is known about monastic life in the Thai Theravada tradition, which this kind of retreat follows.

A typical day

  • Before dawn. Monks wake early, often around 4 or 5, for chanting and meditation.
  • Alms round. At sunrise they walk barefoot through the village with a bowl, and the villagers place food in it. The Pali word is pindapata. Monks do not ask: they accept what is given.
  • One meal before noon. Under the monastic rules, they eat only between dawn and midday. Many monks eat once or twice.
  • Chores. Sweeping, washing and cleaning are practiced with full attention, as a way of meditation.
  • Study and meditation. The afternoon is for walking and sitting meditation, and for reading.
  • Evening chanting. The day ends with chants and, often, a talk by a senior monk.

The rules

  • The Theravada code of discipline, the Vinaya, lists 227 rules for fully ordained monks.
  • Monks own very few things: robes, a bowl, a razor, a water filter and basic necessities.
  • They do not handle money, and they observe celibacy.
  • Touching a woman, even a relative, is restricted by the rules.

Ordination in Thailand

Many Thai men ordain for a limited time, from a few weeks to the three months of the rainy-season retreat, called Vassa, which starts in July. It is seen as a way to earn merit for one's family and to learn discipline. Boys can also enter as novices.

The purpose

The monk's life aims to reduce craving and attachment, which in the Buddha's teaching are the roots of suffering. The tools are ethics, meditation and wisdom.

What laypeople can borrow

  • Do one daily task slowly and with attention.
  • Eat one meal without screens.
  • Spend ten minutes in silence at the start of the day.
  • Give something to someone each week without expecting anything.

A monk's day looks simple. Its aim is to make each moment a little clearer, and that is a path open to anyone.
