Atalanta Fugiens, Emblem 20: Nature Teaches Nature to Overcome Fire

A great fire roars on the right, with thick smoke curling over it. An armored knight with sword and shield stands before it. At his side a naked woman raises one arm, her long hair falling behind her. Beyond them a castle sits on a hill. This is the twentieth emblem of Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens, and its motto says: nature teaches nature to overcome fire.

The book was printed in 1617 at Oppenheim. It has fifty emblems, and each one joins an engraving, a Latin verse, a prose discourse and a fugue for three voices. The engravings are attributed to the workshop of Matthäus Merian. Maier, a physician at the court of Emperor Rudolf II, wanted the book to be seen, read and sung.

The Motto

The Latin line says that nature teaches nature. The verse that goes with it compares the flame to a dragon that devours whatever it meets. Fire is strong, greedy and hard to stop.

The emblem does not answer fire with a weapon from outside. It answers with something of the same order. Nature, in the person of the woman and the knight, meets nature in the blaze.

Fire as the Great Test

Fire runs through every part of the Work. It heats, it burns, it separates and it joins. A lab worker must use it carefully, because too much heat spoils everything and too little achieves nothing.

In the tradition, fire was also an image for the dangers of the process itself: the passions, the struggles, the trials of the seeker. To go through the Work meant to go through fire.

The Knight and the Woman

The knight is clad in armor, hard and fixed. The woman is bare, soft and open. Together they make a pair of opposites standing side by side in front of the flames.

Alchemical pictures often show such a pair: a man and a woman, the sun and the moon, the fixed and the volatile. Here they face fire together. The tradition reads this as the claim that opposites joined are stronger than either alone.

Teaching and Learning

The motto uses the verb "teach." Nature is not a blind force in this line. It is a teacher, and what it teaches is a way to master fire without being burned.

A craftsman learns a trade by watching the material itself. A smith learns what iron does at each color of heat. A potter learns what clay does in the kiln. The knowledge comes from the thing worked on. The emblem gives that idea a poetic form, and it asks the reader to be a student of the flame and not only its victim.

A Reading for Today

Many people try to meet a difficulty with force from outside: more effort, more control, more noise. The emblem suggests another way. The remedy can come from the same source as the trouble.

Anger can be tamed by understanding what anger is made of. Fear can be eased by learning how fear works. In both cases the lesson comes from within the problem.

The Engraving

The engraving shows two worlds side by side. On the left, the landscape is calm: a hill, a castle and a small wooden house. On the right, the fire climbs in dark columns of smoke that cover half the sky.

The knight stands between them with his sword lowered. He is armed, but he is not attacking. His posture is that of a man who is watching and learning. The woman beside him seems to hold the answer in her gesture, and the picture asks us to read it.

The Fugue

Maier did not want his book to be only looked at. Each emblem has a fugue for three voices, and the title Atalanta Fugiens means Atalanta fleeing, and also Atalanta in fugue. In the myth, she ran from her suitors until Hippomenes threw golden apples to slow her.

The voices of the fugue run after each other in the same way. Recordings exist, and listening while studying this picture is a quiet way to take it in.

Contemplating the Emblem

For those who wish to work with this image:

  • Look at the fire, the knight and the woman side by side.
  • Ask what difficulty in your life behaves like a fire.
  • Study that difficulty from within, as a craftsman studies his material.
  • Ask what it is trying to teach you.

Closing

A fire, a knight, a woman, a quiet landscape beyond. Maier's twentieth emblem is a small drama of learning. For the seeker, it carries a calm instruction: do not fight the flames from a distance. Study them, and let nature teach nature how to overcome fire.
