The Secret of the Denisovans: The Ancient Giants of Siberia
In the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia, a cave named after an eighteenth-century hermit called Denis holds one of the great surprises of modern science. In 2008, researchers working there found a tiny fragment of a finger bone. When its ancient genetic material was studied, it revealed a human lineage that nobody had known before. The newcomers were named Denisovans, after the cave.

Like the Neanderthals, the Denisovans disappeared as distinct groups many tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists do not know exactly why. Changes in climate, competition with modern humans, small population sizes and interbreeding may all have played a part.
Their disappearance was probably not a single dramatic event, but a slow fading, in which part of their heritage was absorbed into the growing human family.
