Astrology 101 | Best apps, books, websites to learn about your chart

A twenty-minute beginner's video by Rohini Elyse, who says plainly that she is "by no means an expert" but wants to share what she has learned and her favorite resources for studying astrology. The description lists the astrologer Nadine Jane, with her Instagram, website and YouTube channel, and the free chart service of Astrodienst. I could not access the spoken text, so I do not know every recommendation she makes. This post gives the groundwork a beginner needs.

What a birth chart is

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It places the Sun, the Moon and the planets in twelve signs and twelve houses. The three pieces beginners meet first are the Sun sign, the Moon sign and the Rising sign, or Ascendant, which is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. For the Rising sign you need the exact time of birth, so look for it on a birth certificate.

Aspects are the angles between planets. A conjunction, a square or a trine are read as ways the themes of two planets work together or clash.

A long story

Astrology is among the oldest systems of thought. The Babylonians kept records of the sky as early as the second millennium before Christ. Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century, a foundation text for the Western tradition. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, astrology was taught alongside medicine and astronomy, and the split between them is fairly recent.

Where to start

Astrodienst, based in Switzerland, offers free charts at its website (astro.com) and is a standard tool for students. Beyond that, pick one good beginner's book and one teacher, and practice on charts of people you know. Learn the planets first, then the signs, then the houses. Keep a notebook of what you notice.

A word about proof

Astrology is a rich symbolic language, but science has not found that it predicts personality or events. In a well-known double-blind test published in Nature in 1985, astrologers could not match charts to people better than chance. Many people use it as a tool for reflection, like a mirror, not a map of fate. Take it as that: a way to ask good questions about yourself, and keep the decisions in your own hands.
