Real Astrology Explained Simply | How to Read a Birth Chart!

A twenty-one-minute lesson from a YouTube creator named Kendall Rae, who teaches the basics of astrology and how to read a birth chart, with a clickable table of contents. She says astrology means a lot to her and asks for respect in the comments. I could not access the spoken text, so I do not know every point she covers. This post adds a different angle from the usual beginner's list: how the twelve signs are built.

The signs are built from two simple scales

The twelve signs are made by crossing four elements with three modalities. The elements are fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The modalities are cardinal, fixed and mutable: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs hold on, and mutable signs adapt and finish. Four times three gives twelve, and each sign has its own mix. The pattern goes back to the Greeks, who borrowed the four elements from philosophers like Empedocles in the fifth century before Christ.

Planets, signs and houses

A common way to remember the chart is this: the planet is the what, the sign is the how, and the house is the where. Mercury is about thought and speech; Mercury in Gemini is quick and curious; Mercury in the third house puts that quickness into daily life and learning. The Sun, Moon and the inner planets from Mercury to Mars are called personal planets. Jupiter and Saturn are social planets, and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which move slowly, are generational.

A historical note

Modern chart reading comes from the Hellenistic tradition of Egypt and Greece around the first centuries of our era, blended with older Babylonian omens. The twelve houses and the idea of the Ascendant were refined there. Medieval Arab astrologers and Renaissance Europeans carried the craft forward until, in the seventeenth century, it separated from astronomy.

Keep your wits

Astrology is a symbolic language, and it can make you reflect. Tests, however, have not shown that charts predict personality or events. People tend to accept general descriptions as personal, a habit psychologists call the Barnum or Forer effect. Use the chart as a mirror, enjoy the images it offers, and make your decisions on firmer ground.
