How to Read Your Natal Chart Day 1 | Astrology Lesson! | How to Read You...

A three-minute video by Tan Astrology, from December 2018, the first of "Astrology Camp," a series of thirty daily three-minute lessons on reading a natal chart. The description points to a free website for generating your chart and promises a basic but thorough guide. I could not access the spoken text, so I do not know what Day 1 covers. This post explains what a natal chart is and what the evidence shows.

What a natal chart is

A natal or birth chart is a diagram of the sky as seen from the place and moment of your birth. It shows the position of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the twelve signs of the zodiac, and divides the sky into twelve "houses." To draw it you need the date, the exact time, and the place. The three items most beginners learn first are the Sun sign, the Moon sign, and the rising sign or Ascendant, the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon at birth.

A long history

The word "horoscope" comes from the Greek horoskopos, "hour watcher," the name for the Ascendant. The personal birth chart took shape in Hellenistic Egypt, in the last centuries before the common era, mixing Babylonian omen traditions with Greek mathematics. Ptolemy of Alexandria systematized it in the second century in the Tetrabiblos. The first known horoscope on a papyrus dates from 4 BCE.

The parts of the chart

The planets are the "actors," the signs the "costumes" or styles, and the houses the "stage," areas of life such as home, work, or relationships. The angles between planets, called aspects, such as the conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), and opposition (180°), describe how the actors interact. Ptolemy already listed these angles.

Does it work?

Tests do not support astrology's predictions. In 1985, Shawn Carlson's double-blind experiment in Nature found that astrologers could not match charts to personality profiles beyond chance. In the "time twins" study, Geoffrey Dean and Ivan Kelly followed more than two thousand people born within minutes of each other in London in 1958; they did not find notable similarities in their lives. Many people still enjoy astrology as a language for self-reflection.

How to use it

Treat the chart as a set of prompts: what does your Moon sign say about your needs, and does it ring true? Write what fits and what does not. You will learn more about yourself than about the sky.
