Part 5 of the forest series turns the woods into a cardboard-style scene, with a handmade, craft look. Scroll down to see the full set.
Look closely at the first picture. Deer and fawns stand among the trunks of a mossy glade, and everything in it seems folded and cut from paper: the antlers, the angular flanks, even the leaves, which look like layers of crumpled card in several shades of green. Other scenes in the set swap the glade for a dim, golden forest where light falls in slanting shafts and small orange animals and butterflies drift between the trees, or for a pale, empty backdrop where three broad trees with bark like twisted ribbons rise from a flat cardboard base, with a few small animals standing at their feet.
The cardboard style is what ties the set together. Instead of the soft realism of the earlier parts, these images imitate paper craft, the kind of miniature diorama a patient maker might build on a table. Edges look layered, surfaces look slightly rough, and the shadows are gentle. The forest becomes something to hold in your hands rather than a place to get lost in.
If you want to compare this look with the metal and cloud-centric versions, the earlier parts of the series are linked at the bottom of this page. Take your time with the small animals tucked into the corners.
