The Concept of Takwin: The Sacred Generation of Life

For Jabir, the creation of life is the ultimate application of the law of the Balance. According to this theory, the metals are not primary substances, but rather compound bodies formed by the slow, subterranean combination of two distinct, vaporous principles: Sulfur and Mercury.

These principles are not the common chemical sulfur and mercury found in the laboratory. They are metaphysical archetypes:
* Sulfur represents the active, hot, dry, and masculine principle—the fiery spirit that gives form, color, and activity to matter.

His work demonstrates that the study of the physical world was never seen as separate from the contemplation of the divine. The laboratory was a sacred temple, and the chemical operations were reflections of the soul’s journey toward deification.

The Jabirian Corpus bridges the gap between the ancient Hellenistic mysteries and the subsequent European alchemical tradition. When his works were translated into Latin in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, they electrified the intellectual life of Europe, inspiring figures like Roger Bacon, Albertus Magnus, and Raymond Lull. Yet, beyond his historical influence, Jabir’s philosophy of the Balance remains a powerful challenge for the modern seeker.
