The Platonic Solids: 3 - The Octahedron and the Bridge of Air
Between the sharp heat of Fire and the heavy stability of Earth sits the Octahedron, the third Platonic Solid. It is made of eight equilateral triangles that form two square-based pyramids joined at the base. In this series, it is the geometric sigil of the element of Air.
It represents mobility, communication and the bridge between the lower and higher worlds. Where the cube holds still, the octahedron moves, and that movement is the key to its meaning.
Air in the Platonic scheme
Plato linked the five solids with the classical elements in the dialogue Timaeus. The octahedron was given to Air, the element that is light, quick and able to pass between things. Its eight faces make it balanced, but its points are sharp and mobile, as if it were always ready to turn.
The solids are part of what is often called sacred geometry, a tradition that sees shape as a language of nature. Whether or not one accepts every claim, the octahedron remains one of the most elegant forms in the set.

The Octahedron provides a geometric shield for clarity within this mental noise. It represents the ability to move between perspectives without losing one's central axis. A person who can look at a problem from two sides, and still keep their footing, is working with the octahedron's gift.
Working with the Octahedron
To work with the frequency of the Octahedron is to cultivate the "Middle Pillar" of the intellect. The Middle Pillar is a central idea in the Golden Dawn tradition, where it links the sephiroth of the Tree of Life. In this series, it is applied to the mind: the central line that keeps thought steady.
The initiate must become a master of the breath, which is the Pneuma. Rhythm of respiration can harmonize the inner atmosphere. Slow breathing, held for a few counts, helps to calm the mind before a difficult decision.
When the adept aligns with the Octahedron, they stop being a victim of shifting ideologies. They become the conscious observer, able to bridge the gap between intuition and logic. In this way, the silent wisdom of the higher spheres can be translated into the language of the everyday world.
