There is a part of you that you have never met — or rather, that you have spent most of your life carefully avoiding. It lives in the basement of the psyche, in the space below conscious awareness, holding everything you have rejected, repressed, denied, or disowned about yourself: the rage you were told was unacceptable, the grief you never had permission to feel, the ambition you judged as selfish, the sexuality you were shamed for, the neediness you learned to hide behind competence.
