The Necessary Betrayer Judas Iscariot, the last of the twelve and the one who initiates the final drama, represents the archetype of the Alchemical Shadow . He is the "Dark Messenger" whose presence is required for the completion of the Great Work. In the esoteric mapping, Judas symbolizes the most dense and resistant parts of the subconscious—the parts of the self that remain tethered to the "Thirty Pieces of Silver" (the material illusions and the egoic attachments).
