The Dokkaebi: The Korean Goblin Who Rewards and Punishes
Every folk tradition keeps one spirit whose task is to embody the sheer unaccountability of luck — the way fortune arrives sideways, at night, wearing a grin, and departs just as strangely. In Korea that spirit is the dokkaebi (도깨비): goblin is the customary translation, though it flatters neither party. The dokkaebi is not a demon, not a ghost, not a fairy, and emphatically not the horned ogre of Japanese lore with which colonial-era schoolbooks confused it.
