Dionysius was a ruler of extraordinary wealth, military power, and material luxury, yet he lived in a state of perpetual fear and suspicion, surrounding his palace with guards and refusing to allow even his daughters to shave his beard with a razor, fearing a conspiracy against his life. Among his courtiers was a man named Damocles , who constantly flattered the tyrant, celebrating his magnificent wealth, his absolute power, and his luxurious lifestyle, declaring that Dionysius was the happiest of all men.
