The Philosopher of the Pythagorean Dawn In the late fifth century before the common era, as the classical Greek world was recovering from the Peloponnesian War, a philosopher named Philolaus of Croton undertook the monumental task of committing the secret oral teachings of Pythagoras to writing. Following the violent anti-Pythagorean rebellions in southern Italy that had destroyed the communities and forced the initiates into exile, Philolaus fled to Greece, establishing himself in Thebes. It was there that he composed his lost treatise, On Nature , which became the first public exposition of the Pythagorean system, a work so celebrated that Plato reportedly purchased it for an immense sum to use as the foundation for his own cosmological dialogue, the Timaeus .
