God created the universe through speech : through the utterance of specific Hebrew words and letters, each of which carries not just meaning but structural information about the nature of reality. The letters of the Hebrew alphabet are not arbitrary symbols for sounds. They are the fundamental building blocks of existence — the 22 tools with which the divine craftsman shaped the cosmos. If that seems like poetic speculation, consider this: the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), one of the oldest Kabbalistic texts (estimated composition: 2nd–6th century CE, drawing on much older traditions), opens with the assertion: "With 32 paths of wisdom, the Lord of Hosts engraved and created his universe."
