The Goodhart's Law Paradox: The Metric is the Target
We are drowning in measurements. We track our lines of code, our daily step counts, our search engine visibility metrics, and our financial velocity graphs, entirely convinced that by constantly quantifying our performance, we are marching inexorably toward perfection. This is a severe, structural delusion. The moment we introduce a metric to measure a complex, living phenomenon, we trigger an immediate, non-linear distortion of the system itself. Formalized by the British economist Charles Goodhart, this psychological and operational trap is known as Goodhart’s Law : "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure."
