For over two millennia, standard academic history has taught that Western rational thought began in ancient Greece as a triumphant rebellion against myth and magic. In university lecture halls and standard philosophy textbooks, Parmenides of Elea—a fifth-century BC sage from the southern coast of Italy—is consistently crowned as the "Father of Western Logic." He is remembered as the stern thinker who introduced formal deduction, the principle of non-contradiction, and the abstract ontology of Being. He is presented as a proto-mathematician whose relentless intellect discarded the gods of Mount Olympus in favor of cold, unyielding dialectic. Yet this orthodox portrait is a profound distortion.
