This article approaches Native American spiritual traditions with the humility and respect they deserve. These are living traditions, not museum pieces — practiced today by millions of Indigenous people across North America, maintained through centuries of colonization, forced assimilation, and cultural suppression with remarkable resilience. Any discussion of these traditions must begin with this acknowledgment: they belong to the peoples who created and maintain them, and the appropriate relationship for a non-Native person is one of respectful learning, not ownership or appropriation.
