The "Smiling Angel" of Reims — the Annunciation sculpture on the portal of Reims Cathedral (c. 1230–1255), one of the most beloved images of Gabriel in all of Western art. The radiant smile is not cheerfulness but the luminous serenity of a being who carries only good news. If Michael is the sword of heaven and Raphael is its medicine, Gabriel is its voice — the Archangel whose entire nature and vocation is communication: the transmission of divine revelation from the infinite to the finite, from the eternal to the historical, from the mind of God to the minds of the prophets and saints who would carry that revelation forward into the life of the world.
