Quicksilver, the philosophical Mercury, is the most elusive and enigmatic of all alchemical substances. It is the fluid, ever-changing mediator between the fixed and the volatile, the above and the below, the spirit and the body. Unlike the dense, stabilizing weight of Saturnian Lead, Mercury is entirely unstable, darting, splitting, and re-coalescing with an almost mocking agility. It is the trickster of the metals, the messenger of the gods, and the very lifeblood of the Great Work. Without Mercury, the alchemical process is dead, static, a mere collection of inert powders. It is Mercury that animates, that dissolves, and that ultimately binds the disparate elements into a unified, perfected whole. The true nature of Mercury is inherently dualistic, or rather, hermaphroditic.
