The Strength of All Strength

Alchemical Fortitude and the Warrior’s Intent

“Hic est totius fortitudinis fortitudo fortis. Quia vincet omnem rem subtilem, omnemque solidam penetrabit.”The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus

Among the cryptic lines of the Tabula Smaragdina, or the Emerald Tablet, lies a statement of unparalleled power: “Hic est totius fortitudinis fortitudo fortis”—This is the strong strength of all strength. Historically associated with the completion of the Great Work in Hermetic alchemy, this phrase points to a force that transcends physical muscle or brute willpower. It is the ultimate manifestation of integrated spiritual power: a force so refined that it overcomes every subtle thing, yet so potent that it penetrates every solid obstacle.

The Alchemy of the Unbending Intent

What is this "strength of all strength" when translated into the path of personal transformation? It is what the ancient Toltec seers referred to as unbending intent (intento). It is not the aggressive, loud effort of the ego trying to force its way through the world. Rather, it is a silent, immovable alignment of the will.

In the alchemical tradition, this strength is born when the "above" (the spiritual, the unconscious, the high inspiration) perfectly unites with the "below" (the physical body, the practical action, the earthly grounding). When these two dimensions are no longer in conflict, we access a reservoir of energy that feels practically infinite.

Overcoming the Subtle and Penetrating the Solid

Hermetic philosophy states that this supreme fortitude "overcomes every subtle thing, and penetrates every solid."

  • To overcome the subtle is to master the invisible currents of our inner world: our fleeting doubts, our illusions of self-importance, and the subtle self-pity that disguises itself as compassion.

  • To penetrate the solid is to slice through the seemingly immovable obstacles of the material world—our rigid habits, external blockages, and the heavy conditioning that tells us we are bound to a fixed fate.

When we cultivate this inner fortitude, the physical world becomes malleable, and the spiritual world becomes tangible.

The Implacable Warrior

To touch this "strong strength," we must adopt the discipline of the alchemist and the posture of the warrior. It requires what your notes outline as the essential requirements of the intent: absolute abandonment of ego-driven desires, the calm coldness of self-observation, and the raw audacity to act. By being implacable with our own weaknesses, we cease to be "marionettes without a soul" driven by mechanical thoughts. Instead, we tap into the Silent Protector—that sudden, inexplicable surge of energy that arrives when everything else seems to fail.

The next time you face a creative block, an overwhelming doubt, or an external barrier, evoke this ancient Hermetic formula. Align your spirit with your actions. Remember that the true power does not lie in fighting the world, but in cultivating the integrated, quiet, and unbending strength of your own soul.
